It’s certainly not every day that you find a landlord willing to discount rent due to the fact that someone has a dog. In fact, ordinarily, it’s the exact opposite making it more difficult for dog-owning renters to find a place. However, Sandy Zalagens, a Los Angeles landlord, recently placed an ad for a $150 per month discount if the tenant would adopt Big Louie, a gray brindle pit bull.
Rent For Dog Adoption
Huffington Post reports that while real estate is Zalagens’ job, her passion is saving dogs and, in particular, she has a soft spot for the “underdog of today’s world,” the pit bull.(dog walking services nyc)
Zalagens explains that landlords are a big part of the homeless dog problem because when renters look for an apartment – and due to the housing crisis the number of renters has increased – they struggle to find pet-friendly housing. As a result, they surrender their pets or irresponsibly, let them free to wander around.
This is why Zalagens strives to do the opposite and has recently focused on dogs who are victims of foreclosures. In addition to encouraging her renters to adopt, she sponsors a dog each time she sells a house, she does fundraising races with her office and helps rescues regularly.
Big Louie now lives happily with tenant, Jessie McElwee (above), and a cat who he likes to cuddle with. And though Zalagens admits that her ad for a monthly discount may have bent the rules of renting, she ultimately saved a dog’s life and is happy for it.
We appreciate Zalagens’ work and just wish more New York City landlords were this passionate about helping dogs!
