Izzy is an 11-year-old small terrier who saved her owners life. David, from the UK has Type 1 diabetes and on occasion he will suffer hypoglycemic attacks when his blood sugar plummets. If he doesn’t get his insulin in time, it could lead to a coma. But not while Izzy is around! The Sun reports that, though she’s never been trained in any way to alert someone when David is in this state, she has done it twice.
Once, David was semi-conscious in the bathroom and Izzy knew. David’s wife, Julie was trying to take Izzy for a walk but the pup refused to move. She was whining and scratching at the bathroom door and when Julie got inside, she found David on the floor. He ended up staying in the hospital for weeks from this attack, but thanks to Izzy, it wasn’t much worse. When David had another hypoglycemic attack in his sleep one night, Izzy pawed and barked at Julie to wake her.
Though dogs can be trained to notice drops in blood sugar levels by smelling people’s sweat and breath, the couple says that Izzy is simply very loyal and she’s never been trained to do this.(dog walking services nyc)
For her heroics, the amazing pooch won the Hero Pet of the Year award at the Annual Dogs Trust Honours in London. The Dogs Trust Chief Executive, Clarissa Baldwin, notes that for the last five years they have been working to make people more aware of the wonderful role dogs play in the lives of humans.
