Some Summer Reading: My Name is Moose

May 23, 2012

Inspired by a his favorite book about Ernie the cat (Ernie: A Photographer’s Memoir), Martin Usborne, photographer, decided to create a book about his dog, Moose. My Name is Moose, is a book featuring documentary-style photography and cheeky words that illustrate, according to Usborne, what it’s like to be a dog in the recession.

When Usborne started this project he was ready for a lighthearted take on Moose’s life but it shifted to more serious matters as Usborned struggled to find work and fell in and out of depression. Through it all, however, Moose was a great support system and helped him enjoy the smaller things in life like a simple walk. Moose also helped Usborne deal with self-judgment and through this journey, the book became more emotional and dealt with fears and hopes (dog walking nyc).
Despite the deeper, more complex meanings in the pictures and words, lighthearted readers like children will still enjoy the overarching story about a dog trying to help his master. Moose, the miniature schnauzer is adorable and makes the best faces. We think this would be a great summer read or something to take to the park!
