On Friday, June 29, a litter of seven English Springer Spaniels were born and according to Herald Sun, these are the first of the breed to be born into the NSW Dog Unit. The pups won’t just be regular house pets, however. With a mom that’s a cadaver detection dog and a dad that is an explosives sniffer, they’re bound to follow in these paw prints. Out of the adorable seven who will join the squad, one will likely become a sniffer dogs trained to detect the smell of cash. Though they’ll surely have interesting lives as part of the police force in New South Wales, right now, they all need names.

That’s where you come in! The NSW Dog Unit is opening up their naming to the public. Because they are considering this litter the ‘A’ litter (the first of the breed in the unit) they would like all the pups’ names to start with ‘A.’ The names should also be only two syllables like Aydin, Arrow, Asha and so on. There are over 90 suggestions already on Facebook, some with lots of votes. In the lead at the moment are the names Anzac, Alpha, Ava, Arrow, Angus, Autumn and Apollo. Superintendent of the Dog Squad, Mick Goodwin, is excited to have this new litter. He knows that the genetic abilities of the parents will likely pass down to the litter but he’ll learn at some point if the pups can cut it on the force. He said, “You can usually tell around the 12-month mark if a dog has the potential to make it on to the streets. They can’t be timid, they are not pets.”
