Plans this weekend? Although a weekend just ended, it’s not too early to put a big event on your calendar. This Saturday, July 14, BROADWAY BARKS! is taking place! Hosted by Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters, produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and sponsored by the ASPCA, this adopt-a-thon benefits NYC shelters and adoption organizations and gives people the opportunity to find their furry best friends.(dog walking services nyc)
This year is the 14th anniversary for BROADWAY BARKS! and you can find it at Shubert Alley (in the Theater District between 44th and 45th streets, between Broadway and Eighth Avenue). The big event starts at 3:30pm and homeless pooches will be presented by celebrities from 5:30 to 6:30pm. The goal is clear: to find these dogs a happy family and raise awareness for shelters and homeless pets around the city.
Mary Tyler Moore noted how proud the group is of their accomplishments. She said, “In 2002, the rate of euthanasia among shelter animals was at 74% of total intake. We are proud that as a result of our efforts, in 2008, the number of animals killed in NYC shelters has dropped to 33% of total intake. That means nearly 18,000 fewer animals have been euthanized in our city’s shelters compared to 2003.” That’s a pretty amazing difference!
Even if you don’t plan to take a pooch home with you, there is still much to celebrate and support. Broadway stars from shows like Wicked, Newsies, Porgy and Bess, The Book of Mormon, Memphis and more will be there and an auction of celebrity memorabilia will take place. All auction proceeds and other donations will go toward the organizations at BROADWAY BARKS!
