Every year, on September 11, we remember the people who perished and the heros that helped in the aftermath. It’s a somber day in New York City with the flood light shining from Ground Zero. It’s rare, however, for people to remember the other heros that worked tirelessly after the tragedy: the search and rescue dogs. The Daily Mail did a piece on a unique series of photos by Charlotte Dumas that features them. The stunning portraits of the few that are still with us remind us of their heroism that is easy to forget.(dog walking services nyc)
According to the Daily Mail, out of 100 search and rescue dogs that worked in the aftermath of 9/11, only 12 are still alive. After over a decade had passed, Charlotte Dumas traveled from home to home and snapped the portraits of these remaining heros. Her goal for this project, which she calls “Retrieved,” was not only to honor the people in the attacks on the anniversary, but also to showcase the first responders which were handlers and their dogs.
You can see “Retreived” here in New York at the Julie Saul Gallery where it’s currently being exhibited but in the meantime, here are a few of Dumas’ stunning works via Daily Mail. For blurbs on each dog, go to the original article.
