The New Guinea Singing Dog is thought to be the rarest dog on earth. Only 100 are in captivity across the globe and experts have no idea how many exist in the wild. That’s what made Tom Hewitt’s discovery in Papua New Guinea so exciting. While he was on an expedition with his adventure company he spotted and photographed the New Guinea Singing dog in its natural habitat.

This dog is an ancient one, which explains the nickname, “stone age dog.” The breed is thought to be older than Australian dingoes, which date back thousands of years. It has a unique reddish coat and these dogs can actually climb trees.

Hewitt reported that the dog seemed equally curious about the expedition and watched them for about 15 minutes. He said, “What stood out was how healthy it looked upon closer examination with binoculars.”

A singing dog has never been spotted in this region before so Hewitt’s photographs are that much more amazing (dog walking nyc).
